Three weeks ago an internet user and constituent wrote to congressman David Wu asking for his support of a Marijuana legalization bill.

Congressman Wu wrote back to the individual stating he felt Marijuana was "harmful to our society" (full post here http://redd.it/iiudw ). Here's an except:

Should I be given the opportunity to vote on this bill , I will work to take a position that respects a careful balance between Oregonians' decision to allow the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes while maintaining control over a substance which I believe is ultimately harmful to our society.

Last week it was reveled congressman Wu had sexual intercourse with the underage daughter of a friend. Congressman Wu is resigning from office.

I think congressman Wu will be getting an education in what actually IS ultimately harmful to our society.

STEW OF EPIC FEASTING (a.k.a. throw a bunch of stuff in a pot and hope for the best).

So, I decided to cook again. Yeah, let that sink in.

Here's the recipe:

STEW OF EPIC FEASTING!
(aka. throw a bunch of things in a pot)

1 really big pot/dutch oven/crock. I think this thing is a gallon. Maybe two.

6 lbs of stew meat cut up into large cubes (holy shit was that a pain in the ass! But no pain no gain!)
1 package bacon, thick cut.
2 whole (cloves?) garlic ball thingies (broken up and stuff so the yucky part isn't in there)
1 bay leaf

Fill the pot halfway with water, throw all that stuff above in there and boil it for 10 mins.

Once it's done boiling turn down the heat to a slow roll (med-hi, a little less than Hi) and add this

1 whole thing of celery chopped up into bite size pieces
2 yellow onions chopped up into fairly large chunks (if you weren't sure about nicking your hand cutting the meat you'll find out here)
2 tomatoes, chopped into nice bite sized chunks
1 package (1/2 lb?) of chopped mushrooms
2 handfuls of cracked black pepper2 handfuls of table salt1 tiny palm-pile of ground sage
1 tiny palm-pile of ground thyme
1 big palm-pile of rosemary
1 big palm-pile of paprika

For faster eating leave on med-hi heat (bubbling cauldron style) and cover for 3 hours (I think). Otherwise put it on low for 12 (that oughta do it).

It's not done yet so I either made something really yummy or a gallon of garbage. And I think "tiny palm-pile" = ¼ teaspoon and "big palm-pile" = teaspoon. And "handful" = tablespoon.

We have become the movie idiocracy. Dancing around a burning car shooting guns in the air just because it's on fire.

Basically some pictures of a flipped pickup truck. According to multiple witnesses Chicago police were in pursuit westbound Touhy ave in Skokie when this uninvolved motorist was struck by the fleeing vehicle. No information if Chicago PD caught their suspect. The driver of this pickup truck (an innocent bystander) was taken to the hospital. No word on her condition.

So I’m standing on my corner waiting for the bus like I do every morning. I start hearing singing in the distance, carrying on the wind. It’s not music from a car stereo either. And it’s eerie. Like it’s coming out of a tiny headphone speaker reminiscent of an affect Pink Floyd used on the opening of “Wish You Were Here”.

It gets louder. It sounds like a CTA train conductor speaker.

Coming towards me on Touhy Ave. is a CTA bus with “FORREST GLENN GARAGE” on it’s marquee. As it gets closer it suddenly becomes obvious it’s the driver singing in his manual stop-announcement microphone and it’s being broadcast out of the external speaker on the side of the bus as well as the internal.
He stops where I’m waiting and opens the doors.

Now there’s a point where being ready for something is all important and this was it. Usually I try to be, however it seems mostly whatever I could anticipate happening doesn’t and shit like this happens instead.

The bus is stopped with it’s doors open and the driver is looking at me. The question presents itself. What do I do? Sadly natural instinct took over and I waived him off thinking he must be mistaking me for someone who rides that route. As he closes the door, starts singing again and pulls away it all suddenly hits me.

CTA buses don’t run down Touhy Ave. in Skokie. He wasn’t mistaking me for any passenger waiting for their usual bus! That bus never even comes here! It wasn’t even supposed to be in service!

Next the questions flood into my head. What the hell was that? Who was that? Why did he stop? Why was he singing? What song was that? WHY THE FUCK DIDN’T I GET ON THAT FUCKING BUS?!

Possible answers flood in. Was that Hank Williams’ ghost? Could we have gone to Nashville? It’s good Friday! Was that the carpenter from Jerusalem all those other people say died this weekend? Was that the devil and the bus to hell? Did he want to take me there so I could rule it with him? WHAT THE FUCK!

Well I’ll never know. I could hear him singing out of those speakers nearly a quarter mile away as he went over the I94 bridge and disappeared.
Dammit why didn’t I get on that bus!

I voted against H.R 514 when passed in the House of Representatives on February 17th, 2011. I opposed H.R. 514 because it would have reauthorized objectionable sections of the Patriot Act that were due to expire on February 28. Those provisions are the John Doe roving wiretap provision, which allows law enforcement to conduct surveillance without identifying the person or location to be wiretapped; Section 215, or the "library records" provision, which allows the government to gain access to "any tangible thing" during investigations; and the "lone wolf" provision, which permits surveillance of "non-US" persons who are not affiliated with a terrorist group. All three provisions lack proper and fundamental privacy safeguards.

As a member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, I know that the U.S. Government does not need these extreme legal exemptions in order to keep our nation safe. I will work with my colleagues to pass legislation that not only protects our country from attack, but also preserves our laws and way of life.

Denmark Reverses Position On Copyright Extension - not good.

There is no ethically honest argument in favor of retroactive copyright extension. The point of copyright is to present incentives for the creation of new works. It's a form of an agreement with the public: the public grants the content creator a limited monopoly for a certain period of years, and in exchange, the public gets the work which will then fall into the public domain once that monopoly expires. Extending copyright retroactively makes no sense unless you are distorting the purpose of copyright law. After all, the "deal" was clearly enough at the time of creation to incent the creator to create. Changing the terms of the deal retroactively later is a way to unilaterally change the deal with the opposing party: the public.

Just remember, the current trend is to cap usage and charge MORE for LESS to reduce demand and increase profits as opposed to improving the networks.

That perhaps the greatest result of the Internet is that it will tear down and destroy the current movie and television making model and transform it into something else that will look nothing like it currently does and in the process eliminate all the jobs and trades it supports.
You know, just like they tell me every day that soon there will be no need for Sys. Admins. and technology support staff and I should just get used to it instead of looking to support legislation to protect it.
But not Senator Franken. According to this Ars Technica interview he wishes to legislate the current Hollywood business model into permanent status by law.
Sorry sir but I totally disagree with you and your ideas are dangerous to the future of innovation.

So it's obvious here that this is how the former "professional" media plans to take back journalism from Bloggers. This response could not say any stronger that: "we are professionals, bloggers are not". Very sad, and it won't work. Those horses left the stable with the advent of Blogger, WordPress and MovableType.

I also like the part where they say they need to protect the "privacy" of the source in a case regarding the publication of classified private documents. LOL

We have already published substantial excerpts from the logs, but critics continue to challenge us to reveal all, ostensibly to fact-check some statements that Lamo has made in the press summarizing portions of the logs from memory (his computer hard drive was confiscated, and he no longer has has a copy).
Our position has been and remains that the logs include sensitive personal information with no bearing on Wikileaks, and it would serve no purpose to publish them at this time.
That doesn't mean we'll never publish them, but before taking an irrevocable action that could harm an individual's privacy, we have to weigh that person's privacy interest against news value and relevance.

Number 3: Why is the hostility directed at Assange, the publisher, and not at our governments failure to protect classified information?

Number 4: Are we getting our moneys worth of the 80 Billion dollars per year spent on intelligence gathering?

Number 5: Which has resulted in the greatest number of deaths: lying us into war or Wikileaks revelations or the release of the Pentagon Papers?

Number 6: If Assange can be convicted of a crime for publishing information that he did not steal, what does this say about the future of the first amendment and the independence of the internet?

"The body scanner is sure to get a go-ahead because of the illustrious personages hawking them. Chief among them is former DHS secretary Michael Chertoff, who now heads the Chertoff Group, which represents one of the leading manufacturers of whole-body-imaging machines, Rapiscan Systems. For days after the attack, Chertoff made the rounds on the media promoting the scanners, calling the bombing attempt "a very vivid lesson in the value of that machinery"—all without disclosing his relationship to Rapiscan. According to the Washington Post:
Chertoff’s advocacy for the technology dates back to his time in the Bush administration. In 2005, Homeland Security ordered the government’s first batch of the scanners—five from California-based Rapiscan Systems.
Today, 40 body scanners are in use at 19 U.S. airports. The number is expected to skyrocket at least in part because of the Christmas Day incident. The Transportation Security Administration this week said it will order 300 more machines.
In the summer, TSA purchased 150 machines from Rapiscan with $25 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.

The Obama administration on Monday banned all cargo shipments to the United States from Somalia, expanding a ban imposed initially on shipments from Yemen in the wake of a recent foiled bomb plot.

Two weeks ago, authorities in Dubai and the United Kingdom intercepted two bombs hidden in toner cartridges destined for the United States from Yemen via FedEx and United Parcel Service after a tip from Saudi Arabia.

In addition to the expanded cargo ban, the Department of Homeland Security also prohibited toner and ink cartridges over 16 ounces from any U.S. passenger flights, domestic or international, bound for the United States.

The al Qaeda affiliate based in Yemen has claimed responsibility for the plot.

2 Ill. congressmen want hearings into Yemen packages

Two members of Congress from Illinois asked today for a public hearing into the discovery of explosives sent from Yemen in packages addressed to two Chicago synagogues.

Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Chicago and Jan Schakowsky of Evanston requested that the Homeland Security Committee examine the matter as early as next month. The explosives-laden parcels were intercepted Oct. 29, one in England and one in Dubai, before any damage was done.

In a letter, the two Democrats cited conflicting reports about the intentions behind the explosives.

Media reports suggest the explosives may have been intended for detonation mid-flight, they said. But the lawmakers said they understood the packages may have been part of a "dry run" for a future attack or "intended to spread fear among Jewish Americans and the public at large."

The lawmakers asked for a hearing as early as mid-November when Congress reconvenes.

JJ sends over the latest news of our surveillance society gone nutty. It seems that the Austin Public Library in Texas has officially decided to ban baseball caps, sunglasses and hoodies. What does that have to do with surveillance? The Austin American-Statesman has the word:
The library came up with the rule so that customers can't hide their faces, said Toni Grasso, the libraries' administrative manager in the office of programs and partnerships.
"We have security cameras in place, so like banks and courthouses, we're asking people to remove sunglasses and anything that hides the face, for the security of staff and customers," Grasso said.
As someone who (really, not kidding) frequently goes to my local library wearing all three of these "banned" items, I'm hoping this sort of thing doesn't become a trend.

MILFORD -- A police lieutenant was suspended for one day without pay for inadvertently ordering the destruction of thousands of hours of dashboard video sought by the family of one of the two teens killed when a speeding Milford police cruiser slammed into their car.

Police Chief Keith Mello said Monday afternoon that he suspended Lt. Dan Bothwell, who is in charge of the Records Division, in the incident. The video was the subject of a Freedom of Information request by lawyer Bart Halloran, who said that he hoped to use it to establish a pattern of Milford police officers using excessive speed on routine business.

"I am furious, absolutely outraged at this," Halloran said Monday night. "We will be pursuing every legal remedy available to us for destruction of evidence."

Washington - An appeals court put government prosecutors on notice that they must show evidence that an Algerian detainee held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for more than eight years is actually 'part of' al Qaida, or set him free.
The decision reverses what had been a rare victory for the government since the Supreme Court ruled that Guantanamo detainees had the right to contest their incarceration in U.S. courts. Of the 50 cases that have been decided by district courts, the government has prevailed in only 14.

That's all well and good but how about we have the local municipality do this with our tax dollars and make electricity free and quietly have Exelon (CommEd) go out of business? Hmm?
